Strongman, Vegan Athlete of the Year 2013
Appearing in the Nutriion and Health Talks Room (time slot tbc)
Strongman Patrik Baboumian has been voted Vegan Athlete of the Year 2013 by visitors to www.GreatVeganAthletes.com
Patrik had a great year in 2013, winning the European powerlifting title in the open category and setting two world records in the 125-140kg category. He also set a record for fronthold and keglift, and won the German loglift championships.
He has not been publicity-shy and has been keen to explain his dietary choices and philosophy of compassion to TV and media.
"I'm particularly honoured to be named Vegan Athlete of the year" said Patrik, "because it shows to me once again how much the international vegan community appreciates my work. The notion of that appreciation and support gives me tons of energy to go on with my work even more ambitious than before. To all other vegan athletes I'd like to say: let's all put our strength together and show the world what a healthy and physically beneficial lifestyle Veganism really is."
Patrik beat four other excellent vegan athletes who have each had an incredible year, and we would like to congratulate and thank them all.
Patrik Baboumian (born 1 July 1979 in Abadan, Iran) is an Armenian-German strongman competitor and former bodybuilder. Patrik lost his father in a car accident when he was only four years old. Growing up in the Iran-Irak-War he learned many lessons about life and himself that would make him mentally strong and resistant in the years to come.
By the age of nine Patrik had developed an interest in weight training, which led him to pursue bodybuilding as a young man. In 1999 he won the IFBB German junior bodybuilding championship, and in 2002 he became the overall junior champion at the Gießen Campions-Cup.
Patrik currently holds the world log lift record in the 105k-category (165 kg), as well as the German heavyweight loglift record (185 kg) and the title of "Strongest Man of Germany 2011". Since 2007 Patrik been competing on a international level for many times a fourth place at the log lifting worlds in Vilnius Lithuania being his best result so far. In 2012 he won the European Championship in RAW-Powerlifting (GPA) and set world records in the keg-lift and the fronthold.
When I started the vegetarian diet 2005 I knew little about the effect it would have on my performance and strength. The reasons for my decision were mainly based on my empathy for all kinds of non human animals and the mental conflict I felt, when consuming meat, which would mean that an animal would have to lose its life for my appetite. Expecting at least a slight inverse effect on my training performance I was amazed by the great gains in lean body-mass and strength I got with the meat-free diet. In 2011 after winning the German strongman title I was ready to take the next step and switch to a vegan diet. I am now vegan for more than one and a half years and by now I can say that going vegan was the best decision I have ever made in my life.
